24.02.2021 – 11.00 – Venice-Trieste-Ljubljana? The connections of the north-east with Slovenia and the ramified connection that unravels from there to Austria and the Balkans could become a reality, creating a connection that is natural from a geographical point of view, but continually invalidated by mutual borders.
The Slovenian Railways (Sž) have confirmed that they are in talks with Trenitalia to build a high-speed train between Venice and Ljubljana. The agreements so far envisage an extended Frecciarossa from the former Serenissima to Trieste and then to the Slovenian capital.
The high speed will not be so high once you get to Slovenia, considering the 160 kilometres per hour maximum limit of the Slovenian railways. If the dialogue is successful, a connection will be added in December 2021 or early 2022, although it is not yet clear whether any infrastructure work will have to be carried out to upgrade the lines.
This in turn forms part of the expansion of the rail network between Friuli Venezia Giulia, Austria and Slovenia. In this connection, councillor Scoccimarro had promised a greater commitment in 2021 for railway connections to Vienna.
