Gorizia and Nova Gorica could become European Capital of Culture

03.12.2020 – 15.30 – The candidacy of Gorizia and Nova Gorica as European Capital of Culture (CEC) 2025 officially enters its final phase with the presentation of the second candidacy book ‘GO!2025 Nova Gorica Gorizia“.
During the press conference, the project ideas implemented by the two neighbouring communities will be illustrated, activities are scheduled until 18th December, the date on which the European Commission will announce the recipient of the title.
“The Candidacy is a project that rebuilds a community that was suddenly divided and now finds itself on a common path,” said the Regional Councillor for Culture Tiziana Gibelli, “the almost unison intervention of the two mayors – Rodolfo Ziberna and Klemen Miklavič – represents an historic occasion, because it has proposed an image that is the emblem of a vision shared by the Region from the very beginning” and that wants “to propose to the world a single reality that represents the symbol of the results achieved, from the fall of the borders to today”.

This sentiment was also shared by the two mayors who spoke at the press conference. “In a certain sense, we have already won” said Ziberna “Why? Because more than a hundred people and organisations have created joint projects and collaborated at a level that would have been difficult to achieve without this candidacy. The CEC will show that we are not just a city 100 kilometres from Ljubljana or Venice, but an area of European significance with a unique identity.
“The future is common and integration is crucial for the development of the region,” commented Miklavič. “The ECOC application is a catalyst for this process and a logical step forward in the cooperation between the two cities. With the ECOC, we hope to become an example for Europe, increase the attractiveness of our area and trigger economic effects, including the creation of more and better jobs”.

The next dates to mark on the calendar are 12th December with the virtual visit of the international jury and the final presentation of the application on 16th December, until 18th December, when the results will be announced.
The candidature book was presented by Neda Rusjan Bric, artistic director, Vesna Humar, coordinator for Nova Gorica, Lorenzo De Sabbatta, coordinator of Gorizia and Ivan Curzolo, director of GECT GO.
